Restoring the “Sportsman’s Ideal”
An HRG Classic Car Restoration Time-Lapse

Introduction

This project records the meticulous restoration of an HRG classic car through a time-lapse video, produced by Solutions, a specialist in time-lapse videography. The car, an iconic model from Halford, Robins & Godfrey, transports us back to an era when cars were crafted for true driving enthusiasts. Since the company’s founding in 1935, HRG has built only 241 cars, with 221 still on the road—a testament to the car’s durability and the dedication of its owners. HRG’s reputation as “The Sportsman’s Ideal” was well-deserved, with each vehicle designed for versatility, allowing it to compete in events such as rallies, hill climbs, sprints, and races, while still serving as a daily driver.

The car’s legacy

With a competitive history stretching from the tracks of Le Mans to the trials of the Alpine Rally, this HRG model embodies the golden era of motorsport. Equipped originally with a Singer engine (either 1100cc or 1500cc, depending on the model year), this particular car underwent a factory-engine upgrade to the later short-stroke 1500cc Singer Hunter engine, boasting an impressive 103 horsepower at the flywheel. This model’s history includes a post-1960s journey into professional motorsport, as its owner competed with Dealer Team Vauxhall, further embedding the car in the racing heritage of the mid-20th century.

Restoration Process Captured in Time-Lapse

  1. Dismantling and Inspection:
The time-lapse begins with the dismantling of the HRG chassis W150, carefully capturing each component’s removal and cataloging. From the initial exterior disassembly to engine inspection, each stage showcases the intricate mechanics that make the HRG unique.
  2. Bodywork Restoration:
Given its age, the car required extensive work. The time-lapse captures the process of restoring whilst maintaining authenticity.
  3. Engine Tuning and Upgrades:
The HRG’s Singer Hunter engine received careful tuning, enhancing its performance while respecting its originality. Highlighting the increased 103 horsepower, the engine’s reassembly featured in the video emphasizes the delicate balance between restoration and performance enhancement.
  4. Interior and Detailing:
This stage covers the reupholstering and meticulous attention to detail in restoring the dashboard, instruments, and seating, recreating the driving experience for which HRG was famous. Every element, from the steering wheel to the pedals, is restored to reflect the car’s historic appeal.
  5. Finishing Touches and Testing:
The project culminates with the final touches and a road test, showcasing the car in motion. The time-lapse captures the thrill of the first test drive, bringing the HRG’s legacy back to life on the open road.

The completed restoration is an homage to the HRG’s endurance, both on and off the track. The time-lapse video, expertly produced by Solutions, has not only preserved the process but has also created a digital archive for enthusiasts and potential restorers. This project demonstrates how combining historical respect with modern techniques can breathe new life into vintage cars. The final result is a beautifully restored HRG, ready to continue its legacy on modern roads, embodying the spirit of “The Sportsman’s Ideal.”
